Most Battles of the Civil War were won with flanking regiments surrounding the enemy army. Having experienced army generals proved to pay off (troops led by inexperienced generals often encountered more defeat). Guerilla warfare was still utilized though not as effective in the border states. Also, naval battles and blockades were popular war tactics of the Civil War.
