Many breakthroughs in technology were made during the course of the war. Sanitation in army camps alone was vastly improved with the US Sanitation Committee. Tools and devices used for medical procedures remained relatively juvenile. The use of the telegraph greatly aided the Union in their victory. Naval ships began to exhibit signs of improvement as ironclads became common.
